Is obsession a useful tool in achieving our goals?

On one hand, some argue that obsession is a necessary component of achieving life goals. Without a deep level of focus and commitment to a particular goal, it can be difficult to make progress and overcome obstacles. Many successful individuals, such as athletes, entrepreneurs, and artists, have achieved great success by channeling their obsession into their work. In fact, some argue that obsession is what sets apart those who achieve great success from those who do not.

On the other hand, there are those who caution against the dangers of obsession. An obsession can become all-consuming, causing individuals to neglect other important aspects of their lives, such as relationships, health, and wellbeing. Additionally, an obsession can lead to tunnel vision, causing individuals to become so focused on their goals that they lose sight of other opportunities and experiences that may be beneficial to them. In extreme cases, an obsession can even lead to self-destructive behaviours and negative consequences.

So, where does the balance lie? Is obsession necessary for achieving life goals, or is it a dangerous path to follow?

One perspective is that it depends on the individual and the goal in question. Some goals may require a level of obsession to achieve, such as breaking a world record or creating a groundbreaking innovation. Other goals, such as maintaining a healthy work-life balance, may require a more balanced approach that prioritises multiple areas of life.

Ultimately, it is up to each individual to determine their own relationship with obsession and how it can best serve their goals and overall well-being. As with most things in life, balance is key. While obsession can be a powerful tool for achieving goals, it is important to maintain a healthy perspective and ensure that it does not come at the cost of other important aspects of life.
